Framing & Presentation

Custom Framing

Whether you need a frame for your home or an exhibition, we are able to have a frame made to your specifications.

Please contact us for a quote. We prefer to use AR-70 anti-reflective glass. Other glazing options are available.

We frame in both a classical style which includes matting and wood frames, and float mounting images within box frames. We also frame in a contemporary style where the image fills the entire frame, the work is mounted to dibond, and then boxed in in a professional frame.

We specialize in framing photo-based artwork and use all natural, archival materials (i.e natural rag vs. cardboard or masking tape) in our work flow. With our approach, the artwork is protected at all times.

We do not use 8-ply rag, use V-grooves or any coloured mats. In the last 22 years, we have not made a metal frame. Please know that we use a limited number of moldings. However, like any frame shop, we can source specific materials. We also carry a range of handmade, Ontario wood frames (Cheery, walnut, and maple), which are treated with natural oil and have hand joined splines.

Presentation

Matting

Using a cotton rag 4-ply board, our presentation mats add the final touch to your work. This presentation step is very important to us. For all of our custom, handmade prints we use a 2-ply rag backer and corner mount the image to this backer. Then, we cut a 4-ply rag window mat to join with the 2-ply mat. We then put this combination into plastic sleeves specifically suited for the size needed. This is an exceptional way to keep prints together and safe before framing, and/or presenting your work to gallerists/curators.

We can also connect you with local artisans that can make custom, professionally-bound archival boxes to house your small print sets. We have samples on site.

For custom dimensions and a quote specific to your project, please contact us via email.

Mounting

Mounting is recommended when displaying large prints, adding stability for presentation purposes.
When framing where the image goes right to the edge of the frame, this requires mounting to either acid-free foam or dibond to ensure a clean and stable presentation.

We use both hot and cold mounting methods depending on the purpose and materials being used.
Historically, mounting is recommended when presenting larger size prints. This is also recommended strongly for presenting silver gelatin prints over a certain size. Silver gelatin prints can only be hot-mounted onto rag board, while contemporary inkjets can be either hot or cold mounted onto many substrates. We work with various materials for mounting.

We are familiar with using different materials such as diabond (which is used for stability for super-size prints), and sintra (which is a material that is required in certain commercial settings for fire ratings for example), and acid-free foam (which is sometimes used in replace of diabond, and allows for the frames to be lighter in size).

What we do not do here is face-mount to plexi or acrylic. This, we can recommend other practitioners in the city that can do this service for you.
